Assessment · Backup and recovery
Prove your backups would bring the business back
We map every system that holds business data, check what is protected and where copies live, perform a test restore of an agreed sample, and compare realistic recovery times with what your business can tolerate.

What this assessment tells you
Having backup software is not the same as being able to recover. We regularly meet businesses whose backups had silently failed for weeks, whose only copy sat on a drive attached to the server it protected, or who assumed Microsoft automatically kept every deleted email forever. They usually discover this during an outage or a ransomware event, which is the worst possible time.
The Backup & Recovery Assessment replaces assumptions with evidence. We identify every place your business data lives, confirm which of those places are protected, look at how long copies are kept and whether any copy is isolated from attackers, and perform a real test restore. Then we ask the business question: if this system were lost at 10 a.m. on a Tuesday, how much data could you afford to lose, and how long could you wait?
Deliverables
Data coverage map
Servers, file shares, line-of-business databases, Microsoft 365 mailboxes, OneDrive and SharePoint, each marked protected, partially protected or unprotected.
Test-restore result
A documented restore of an agreed sample, such as a folder, a mailbox or a virtual machine, with the time taken and any problems encountered.
Recovery gap table
Your stated recovery point and recovery time expectations compared with what the current setup can realistically deliver.
Recommendations and readout
Severity-rated findings and a prioritized plan, presented in a readout meeting.
In scope
Included
- Inventory of systems holding business data and how each is backed up
- Backup job history and failure patterns over the available log period
- Retention settings and number of restore points
- Location of copies, including off-site, cloud and isolated or immutable copies
- Separation of backup credentials from everyday administrator accounts
- Microsoft 365 retention and third-party backup coverage
- One supervised test restore of an agreed sample
Excluded
- Recovering data after an actual loss or attack
- Full disaster recovery exercises or failover tests
- Buying or configuring new backup software or storage
- Data recovery from failed physical drives
- Writing a complete business continuity plan
Prerequisites
- Read-only or operator access to each backup console in use
- A list of business-critical applications and where their data is stored
- An owner or manager who can state acceptable data loss and downtime for key systems
- A safe location to restore the test sample that will not overwrite live data
- Contact with your current backup vendor or provider if they manage the platform
Eligibility
Standard scope
Up to two backup platforms and about 10 protected servers or workloads, plus one Microsoft 365 tenant.
Custom scope
Multiple sites with separate backup systems, large virtual environments or several databases with specialist restore steps.
Not suitable during an incident
If you have lost data or are dealing with ransomware now, call us immediately instead of buying an assessment.
Pricing basis
The proposed price is a fixed CAD 699 before tax for the standard scope, pending business approval and confirmed in a written quotation. The test restore is limited to one agreed sample so that the fee stays predictable.
If the assessment shows that you need ongoing oversight, Backup Monitoring adds daily job checks and periodic test restores at a proposed per-device monthly price.
How it is delivered
Two to three weeks is typical. The restore is scheduled at a time that suits your team.
Business interview
We agree which systems matter most and what recovery you expect for each.
Console review
We review job history, retention and copy locations on each backup platform.
Test restore
We restore the agreed sample to a safe location and record the time and result.
Report and readout
We present the coverage map, gap table and recommendations.
Terms
Price, scope and terms are drafts pending business and legal approval and are shown in full before checkout. A successful test restore demonstrates that one sample could be recovered on that day; it does not assure recovery of every system. Taxes are calculated at checkout.
Frequently asked questions
Does Microsoft back up our Microsoft 365 data?
Microsoft keeps the service running and offers retention features, but those are not the same as an independent backup. The assessment shows what your current settings would and would not let you recover.
Is the test restore risky?
No. We restore to a separate location agreed with you, never over live data.
What are RPO and RTO?
Recovery point objective is how much recent data you could afford to lose; recovery time objective is how long you could wait to get a system back. We help you set realistic values.
Can you fix the gaps?
Yes. Remediation is quoted separately, and Backup Monitoring keeps an eye on jobs afterwards.
